Riyad Mahrez fueled rumours of an imminent move away from Leicester as he was spotted departing the Emirates after Arsenal‘s 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. Granit Xhaka, who scored a winner in the 60th minute, was the hero on Wednesday night but much of the talk following Arsenal’s spirited win surrounded Mahrez’s surprise attendance in north London.
It’s understood Mahrez, a player consistently linked with Chelsea and Arsenal in recent months, was sat in the crowd alongside Leicester team-mate Islam Slimani.
With both London clubs on the hunt for attacking reinforcements this January, the Algerian’s sighting sent many fans into a frenzy as he left the stadium in his car. However, according to Sky Sports, Mahrez was not at the Emirates to discuss a move following the clash – the winger instead met up with close friend N’Golo Kante in the aftermath of the Gunners’ win.
Leicester boss Claude Puel recently claimed that Mahrez could cost as much as £100million at the end of the season. ‘It is speculation and we cannot respond to all the speculation with information,’ Puel said earlier this month. ‘Perhaps, in the summer he will cost even more than £100m. It is always the same thing about Riyad. It is just rumours, noise about him and other players.
‘We can see Riyad smiling and enjoying his football and enjoying playing with his team-mates and it is the same in training. ‘After the training session, he continues to play head tennis, and I want him to get more rest. All the rumours and speculation about Riyad, do the reporters want him to leave the club?’
