An African blogger, Mfon Abek Ekene has started a petition online for Barcelona and Argentina footballer, Lionel Messi to reconsider his retirement from international football.
Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football after a penalty shootout loss to Chile at the COPA America football tournament.
He said after the game;
“It’s been four finals, I tried. It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn’t get it, so I think it’s over,” he added.
“I think this is best for everyone. First of all for me, and then for everyone. I think there’s a lot of people who want this, who obviously are not satisfied, as we are not satisfied reaching a final and not winning it.
“It’s very hard, but the decision is taken. Now I will not try more and there will be no going back.”
The petition is hoping to make the five times world footballer of the year go back on his words.
The petition reads
“Lionel Messi apart from being a footballer, a legend and all that, he is an inspiration to millions of children all over the world. Overcoming a life threatening disease as a child to becoming one of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen even when doctors said he may never be able to kick a ball.
“This has endeared him to many. It has made him a symbol of hope when there is hopelessness. ‘If Messi could do it when all hope was lost, then why can’t I?’ That is the sort of confidence he has triggered with his achievements. But choosing to give up on international football because of failure to win in some finals is demoralizing to the millions looking up to this great germ as inspiration.
“Heroes don’t give up until it is done! This is telling the legend, the great Lionel to come back on international duty and conquer the world. I am not from Argentina I am from Africa and I know what Messi means to those here!”
