A 23-year-old man, Olaiya Oluwaseyi, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly slapping and beating his girlfriend, Kehinde Igiebor.
The accused was arraigned on a one-count charge of assault.
The prosecutor, Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 15 at 8 p.m. at Omisanjana Street, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state in Nigeria.
Akinwale, a police sergeant, explained that the accused, whose address he did not identify, on the said date, unlawfully slapped Igiebor because she refused to pick his calls.
He further told the court that the accused also beat the said girl “mercilessly’’ because he heard that she was dating someone else in the neighborhood.
The prosecutor said that the offence was contrary to the Criminal Code, Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge while his counsel, Mr Tunde Falade, prayed the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.
He promised that the accused would not jump bail if granted.
The Magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Ajibade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 and two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case to April 28 for further hearing.
