Years Ago, When I Was Still Very Young And Still Living In Lagos…

Years ago, when I was still very young and still living in Lagos.
The compound directly opposite mine was a family house.
For some reasons, out of all the 15 children the man has, only 1 was successful. All what he laid his hands on brought profit, but the same couldn’t be said for the other children.
.
.
One of his children, a female, had a big salon. Actually, the biggest in the street as at that time. But for reasons unknown, she never had any customers.
.
.
Someone can just open her salon for the first time, and you will already see 2 women wanting to make their hair. But this woman opposite my compound, never had any.
.
.
As far as I know, she was a nice person with a faint voice, you’d have to strain your ears to hear her well, and her fee was low but why no customers? I don’t know and I wasn’t gonna find out.
.
.
As my ritual, considering I had no friends in the street. When I’m back from school, I’d stay outside for 20minutes and that will be all for the day till the next day.
I make time to stay outside, 20minutes everyday.
And in that 20minutes, I tend to see things this woman always did.
.
.
You know this beggars that walk in the streets moving from shops to shops begging for alms? Yea!!!
.
.
So this is what this woman does…
Without them coming to her, she calls them and then hands them money or slippers or biscuit or just any thing eatable.
But before she does this, this is what she does.
.
.
If it’s money, she takes the money close to her mouth, she speaks to the money, she rubs it on her head, rubs it on all her children’s head, after she must have done these, she calls the beggar and hands the money over.
.
.
With smiles, the beggar thanks her. Most times, the beggars pray for her.
And all this she says AMEN!!!
I never understood why.
.
.
I also found out a particular neighbor of mine does this.
As I couldn’t ask her, I had to ask her daughter who was my age mate.
.
.
So this is what she said, ‘their pastor gives them an assignment to do”
Really?
Pastor gives you a spiritual kind of assignment, and this assignment is selling or giving your problems, sickness and bad luck to a beggar?
Wow!
My neighbor does the same thing the other woman does, but hers, is slightly different.
Most times, she brings out the money from her Bible. She prays fervently on it and then hands over the money.
.
.
I think the one that pissed me off the most was when I heard her clearly ‪#‎selling‬ the curses in her generation to that beggar.
.
.
So a Pastor thinks the best way to cancel the curses from a generation is by selling it to a beggar that has done you no wrong. A beggar whose life is already damaged? I mean, if he or she is begging for alms, is that not enough curse already?
.
.
.
This thing still happens, it happened last month.
On my way to Lagos, you know those beggars, the other annoying fulanis or are they Liberians? Those ones that hold your clothes till you give them money?
Ehn, them!
The man seated next to me brought out N500. In my mind, what a good guy. Others would give N20 and still ask them for change.
.
.
It was short-lived when this dude started praying on the N500 quietly.
I’ve got very sharp ears. It’s not like I was eavesdropping because I wasn’t, he was giving all his bad luck to the girl. Wow!
After the prayer, I helped him end it with an Amen!!!
At least, let him know I heard him loud and clear.
.
.
.
With all the rubbing of their heads and faces, all the countless fruitless prayers made, that woman never had any customers.
Her big salon is still empty.
Common sense sure is lacking. Because if it wasn’t lacking, she should have known those dirty prayers didn’t work.
.
.
.
So I’m wondering, why should beggars be the ones to collect the curses in your family or your bad luck, or your sickness? Why?
Can’t your pastor throw these calamities, deaths in the sea? Why a human? A human that has done you nothing? Why a beggar you may never meet again?
.
.
.
I see these things when I was in Lagos.
I see madness.
I see people before they buy fruits say some crazy things and then give it to that helpless beggar..
.
.
.
No one is forcing you to give them money.
If you are scared giving them money will make your penis disappear, then don’t.
But giving them and passing your frustrations and family problems is inhumane.
